Thank you for considering the Kalamazoo Humane Society for volunteering! The Kalamazoo Humane Society has been improving the lives of animals since 1897, and our volunteers are a critical part of our ability to continue helping animals and their owners.
Our primary focus is on pet overpopulation prevention and veterinary healthcare which is accomplished through low-cost spay/neuter surgeries and access to full service non-emergency veterinary care, outreach in the community, and partnerships with other animal organizations. We also participate in community events, offer a pet food bank, provide shelter and straw for outdoor dogs seasonally, among other services and programs all designed to help people and animals in our communities. Before you apply to volunteer at KHS, we want to make sure you understand that we do not have adoptable animals at our office. KHS is not a shelter or a pet rescue. While we do have animals on-site during the day, those animals are here for spay/neuter services or other types of veterinary care. As part of our partnership with KCASE, we do direct those wishing to work directly with the animals to assist at the shelter. Those volunteer positions are hands-on with animals, and happen at the shelter location and not at KHS. Those wishing to work at the shelter will need to call them at 383-8775 asking for the date and times of the next shelter volunteer orientation. We do offer a number of important volunteer opportunities at our office, however they are generally not hands-on with animals.
After you submit your volunteer application, we will be in touch to schedule an interview with you, or to invite you to a group orientation. We look forward to meeting you and getting you involved in KHS programs and services!

Due to the time and resources we invest in our volunteers, we ask each volunteer to commit to a minimum of 4 hours each month, and at least 48 hours total. We have a wide range of available opportunities, and your 4 monthly hours could be completed in just one volunteer session. Please consider your own schedule and time restrictions before applying to volunteer.
I am at least 16 years old
I agree to provide a minimum commitment of 48 hours of service, with a minimum of 4 hours per month to remain active. (Exceptions may be made for those volunteering as part of a work or school community service project.)
I accept and understand the Kalamazoo Humane Society Volunteer Waiver and Agreement.
