CJSL - Club Adult Member Code of Ethics
Purpose:
This code of ethics has been developed to clarify and distinguish approved and accepted professional and ethical behavior from that which is detrimental to the development of youth soccer players within the Cosmopolitan Junior Soccer League (CJSL).
This Code of Ethics is applied to all Adult Members including but not limited to coaches, managers, referees, league officials, parents and spectators.
The CJSL identifies that in most cases each Club Coach and league recognized representative will be responsible for ensuring compliance of this code.
Violations of this code of ethics may result in penalties upon a Club by the CJSL if committed by an Adult Member or another individual present at a CJSL Game or Club Training Session.
Responsibilities to Players
- The Adult Member shall never place the value of winning over the safety and welfare of players.
- Adult Members shall instruct players to play within the laws of the game and within the spirit of the game at all times.
- Adult Members shall not seek any unfair advantage by teaching or encouraging deliberate unsportsmanlike behavior to players.
- Adult Members should not tolerate inappropriate or unsportsmanlike behavior at Games or Club Training Sessions from players or adults regardless of the situation.
- The demands Adult Members place on Players' time should never be so extensive as to interfere with academic goals or progress.
- Adult Members must never encourage Players or other adults to violate rules and policies.
- Adult Members should direct Players to seek proper medical attention for injuries and to follow the physician's instructions regarding treatment and recovery.
- Adult Members should take an active role in educating their Players about sports nutrition, fitness and about the negative effects of alcohol and smoking.
- Adult Members should educate themselves on a constant basis in order to provide their Players with the highest-level instruction possible.
- Adult Members should always place the Player’s development first and place Team success Second.
- Adult Members shall not discriminate against any player based upon race, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, language, appearance, religion, physical ability, financial ability or any other means to treat one type of person better than another and as such should never make any derogatory comments about any player's race, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, language, appearance, religion, physical ability, financial ability or any other attributes, in any soccer activity towards their own player or the players of opposing teams.
- Adult Members should never engage in any type of communication that infers any type of connotation that is sexual in nature towards any player.
Responsibility to the CJSL and Member Association ENY
- All Adult Members will adhere, at all times, to all CJSL, USYSA and ENYYSA rules, bylaws and policies.
- Any issues between Clubs should be addressed between the Clubs first. If the issue cannot be resolved between the Clubs, the involved Clubs should refer the issue to the League, CJSL.
Responsibilities to the Laws of the Game
- Adult Members should be thoroughly acquainted with and demonstrate a working knowledge of the Laws of the Game.
- Adult Members are responsible to assure their Players understand the intent as well as the application of the Laws of the Game.
- Adult Members must adhere to the letter and spirit of the Laws of the Game.
- Adult Members are responsible for their players' actions on the field before and after the game and must not permit them to perform with the intent of causing injury to opposing players.
- Adult Members must constantly strive to teach good sporting behavior.
Responsibility to Referees
- Referees must have the support of all our Coaches/Managers, players, and spectators (parents). Coaches/Managers must always refrain from criticizing Referees in the presence of players or spectators.
- Professional respect, before, during and after the Game, should be mutual. There should be no demeaning or threatening dialogue or gestures between Referee, Adult Members, Spectators or Players.
- Coaches/Manager must not incite players or spectators (parents) or attempt to disrupt the flow of any Game. Coaches/Managers must keep the playing field safe from any infringement that can lead to an unsafe environment for players, referees or spectators.
- Comments regarding a Referee should be reported to the league in the CJSL Game Issue Form
Responsibility of Public Relations
- Adult Members have the responsibility to assist their players in conducting themselves properly when in public and representing their team, their Club, USYSA and/ or CJSL.
Other Responsibilities
- An Adult Member's behavior must be such as to bring credit to himself, or herself his or her Club and the sport of soccer.
- While the concept of rivalry is wholly embraced, it cannot take precedence over exemplary professional conduct.
- The attitude and conduct of the Adult Member towards Officials, Players, spectators, and other Adult Members should be controlled and undemonstrative. It is unacceptable for an Adult Member to have any verbal altercation with an opposing Adult Member or Player before, during or after the Game.
- Adult Members must use their influence on his/her teams’ spectators to prevent intimidating and/or unacceptable behavior towards Officials including Referees, Player(s) and opposing team spectators.
