National Science Foundation Section 106 Process
The National Science Foundation (NSF) is considering investment in the construction and operation of the Thirty Meter Telescope (TMT).
Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) requires Federal Agencies to identify and assess the effects any project, activity, or program funded in whole or in part by a Federal agency may have on historic properties. Each federal agency must consider public views and concerns about historic preservation issues.
Right now, NSF is identifying consulting parties to engage with during Section 106 consultation process under the NHPA.
NSF has said that they anticipate Section 106 meetings will be held during the first half of 2024.
If you care about Mauna Kea it is your right to express interest in being a part of the consultation process for the Section 106 meetings.
Dear National Science Foundation,
Please add my name as a consulting party for the Section 106 review process under the NHPA for the Thirty Meter Telescope project proposed to be built on Mauna Kea.
Check all that apply.
I am a Native Hawaiian with ancestral ties to Mauna Kea.
I am concerned about the substantial, significant and adverse cumulative impacts the proposed TMT project will have on Mauna Kea.
I am concerned about the adverse effects the project will have on historical properties of traditional, religious and cultural significance.
I would like to advise on the identification and evaluation of historic properties, including those of traditional, religious and cultural importance.
I would like to be informed of all of the steps in the Section 106 process including any public meetings that are held.
