The Department of Internet Ministries of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America is conducting this survey as part of its work with OrthodoxJobs.com to gain an understanding of the landscape of employment and volunteering in the local parish for various ministries. The survey deals with the music ministry in a parish - choirs, chanters, etc. and the work they perform within the liturgical services and in the life of the parish.
Please Note: For the purposes of this survey, please accept that the term Chanter refers to a monophonic (byzantine chant) style of singing, and choir refers to a polyphonic (ex. 4-part harmony) style of singing. Yes, a choir can sing byzantine chant, but for the sake of simplicity and in recognition that there are a variety of practices in different Orthodox parishes across the many jurisdictions in North America, we are using these terms to try to cover the general trends that exist in parishes.
