Membership  Process

There must be two sponsors for each applicant; you may need to find a co-sponsor. The co-sponsor must be able to speak to the application when the other sponsor cannot be present.

Both sponsors must separately complete a Membership Application Sponsor form.

Attend a social event or take Applicant on a tour of our facilities. This is not required but is a great idea to familiarize them with the Club.

Attend the Membership Committee interview and orientation. Applicant cannot be interviewed by the Membership Committee without a sponsor present and will have to reschedule.

At the Membership Committee interview, you should briefly introduce the Applicant - profession, boating experience, community service, family - and why you believe the Applicant is a good fit for OYC. If you don't know the Applicant well, meet with them so that you are comfortable speaking for their membership.

The Applicant and at least one Sponsor must attend the BOT meeting when the Applicant will meet with the BOT. Membership is the first item on the agenda each month. Applicants will be introduced to the Board and sponsors will be asked to speak on behalf of the Applicant. The BOT may ask questions of the Applicant. Applicants will be excused and the Board will vote on their membership. The Membership Committee will coordinate with sponsors to notify the Applicant of the BOT's vote.

Upon becoming members, Applicant will receive a new member packet which will include a Yearbook, Burgee, Parking Stickers. Security provisions will be sent to new members via email.

Membership Chair will make reservations for new members to attend the next dinner meeting which will be paid for by the Club. At least one sponsor should accompany the new member to the dinner meeting where they will be inducted into OYC.

Contact the new member in a month or so to ensure they are enjoying the benefits of the Club. Reacquaint them with the opportunities and responsibilities of being an OYC member, discuss upcoming events, their CSP plan, parking, etc. Provide encouragement and guidance, and get them involved early on!
A total of up to six CSP hours may be awarded for sponsorship. Typically each sponsor will receive up to three CSP hours provided they participate in the application process. This is not guaranteed. The hours are provided to emphasize the amount of time sponsors should spend with the Applicant helping them through the process and orienting them to OYC. Encourage the Applicant to contact you as they familiarize themselves with the rules and general social environment of the Club.

By my signature below as a sponsor of Applicant, I have reviewed The Olympia Yacht Club documents - CSP Participation Form, Bylaws, Rules and Regulations, Moorage Agreement, and Island Home Rules - with the Applicant prior to submitting this Membership Application Sponsor Form, and answered any questions from Applicant concerning membership responsibilities and expectations.
